Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to field first against West Indies

India fielded the same playing XI against West Indies which they played vs Zimbabwe

The stage is set for the high-stakes T20 World Cup Super 8 Group 1 showdown between India and the West Indies. This Super 8 clash is a true winner-takes-all scenario. The victor of the match will secure a spot in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals to face England at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on March 5, while the loser’s tournament journey will come to an abrupt end. Recognising the conditions, Suryakumar Yadav began the evening on a high note by winning the toss and opting to bowl first, a tactical move aimed at navigating the heavy dew expected later in the match.

Following the coin toss, the Indian captain—popularly known as "SKY"—candidly acknowledged the palpable tension within the dressing room given the magnitude of the fixture. Despite the immense pressure of a virtual knockout, he emphasized that the squad is focused and determined. Suryakumar noted that the team is committed to giving their absolute best effort to ensure they come out on the right side of the result and keep their World Cup dreams alive.

“There will be tension. There will be nerves. But if there’s no pressure, there’s no fun. But the mood in the camp is good. I think we ticked all the boxes in the last game. And taking that positivity coming here in this game, I think it’ll be a good one. No, we’re going with the same team,” Suryakumar said at the toss.

India play unchanged XI, West Indies make one change

For the high-stakes clash against the West Indies, India opted for consistency, naming an unchanged playing XI from the side that secured a 72-run victory over Zimbabwe. In contrast, the West Indies made a tactical adjustment to their lineup, bringing in spinner Akeal Hosein to replace batter Brandon King. This selection highlights the differing strategies of the two teams as they navigate the unique conditions at Eden Gardens.

Despite being the dominant force in T20I cricket since their 2024 World Cup triumph, India finds their stellar reputation on the line. The tournament favorites now face a do-or-die scenario where their past achievements offer no safety net; a defeat in this match would result in a shock exit before even reaching the semi-final stage.

India’s journey through the 2026 tournament has been a rollercoaster. After a flawless, undefeated run in the group stages, the India suffered a sobering 76-run defeat to South Africa in Ahmedabad. That loss simplified their path significantly: they were left with no margin for error, needing to win their final two Super 8 fixtures just to stay in contention for a spot in the final four.

To spark a turnaround, the defending champions made a bold personnel shift before the Zimbabwe game, promoting Sanju Samson to the opening slot and dropping finisher Rinku Singh. The gamble paid off handsomely as India plundered a massive 256 runs, eventually clinching a 72-run win. However, because the West Indies also suffered a defeat to South Africa after beating Zimbabwe, both teams enter this final Group 1 fixture with identical stakes—knowing that only the winner will survive to play in Mumbai.

India's Playing XI:

Sanju Samson(w), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah

West Indies' Playing XI:

Shai Hope(w/c), Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph
