2026 T20 World Cup to begin from February 7

Former India T20I captain Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma unveiled the side's new jersey for the 2026 T20 World Cup that is set to begin from February 7. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia formally handed the jerseys to the two during the innings break in the second ODI between India and South Africa in Raipur.

Rohit reflected on India's long journey that led to them winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and end their 11-year drought for an ICC trpphy. He wished the current Indian team the best of luck and expressed faith in them to deliver in the upcoming World Cup.

“It’s been a long journey. We won our first World Cup in 2007, and we had to wait more than 15 years to win the next one. It’s been a long road with plenty of ups and downs, but it felt great to lift the trophy again. Now, with the World Cup happening in India, it’s going to be an exciting tournament. My best wishes are always with the team, and I’m sure everyone will be behind them, supporting them and doing their best," Rohit said during the jersey launch ceremony.

Rohit named as the tournament's ambassador

Notably, Rohit had earlier been named as the ambassador for the 2026 T20 World Cup that will be jointly-hosted by both India and Sri Lanka. The  Men in Blue's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav wasn't present during the ceremony as he is set to represent Mumbai in the  Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while vice-captain Shubman Gill is yet to fully recover from the neck injury that he sustained during the first Test of the two-match series against South Africa.

Meanwhile, the 2026 T20 World Cup will kick-off on February 7 and a total of three matches are set to take place on the date. The clash between Pakistan and Netherlands will begin the tournament while West Indies and Bangladesh will face-off in the second game. The third and final match of the day will be played between India and USA at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
