Pakistan's veteran all-rounder Imad Wasim came to Trent Rockets' rescue as Tim Southee and Chris Wood wreaked havoc with the new ball in the Hundred 2024 clash on August 12. Wasim walked in to bat and contributed with a crucial run-a-ball 29 before he was retired out by the management as only 14 balls were left in the innings. He became the first Pakistan batter to retire out in T20s or the Hundred format.

Wasim is the third batter in the men's The Hundred competition to get retired out. Sam Billings and Wayne Madsen are the other two players.

After the early jolts, Trent Rockets were 22/4 from 30 balls against Birmingham Phoenix. Tom Alsop and Wasim stabilised the innings with their 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket from 56 balls. Wasim got off the mark with a boundary.

He struggled to score against Sean Abbott. Meanwhile, Alsop did the damage. Wasim made up for the dot deliveries with two consecutive fours off Abbott. Wasim was lauded by Joe Root in the dugout as he helped the team recover from an early collapse.

Southee bags fifer

After Wasim was retired out, Chris Green hit a boundary before losing his wicket. Alsop got to his half-century with a six before getting out next ball. Four wickets fell in the last over as Southee completed his maiden fifer in the competition and restricted Trent Rockets to 118. The Kiwi pacer’s 5/13 is the second-best bowling figures in the history of the The Hundred.

In reply, Birmingham Phoenix chased down the target with four wickets in hand and seven balls to spare. Opener Ben Duckett's 16-ball 30 followed by unbeaten knocks from Liam Livingstone (32-ball 30) and Jacob Bethell (29-ball 38) helped Phoenix get over the line.
