After showcasing brilliant form in the domestic circuit, especially with an outstanding Ranji Trophy performance, Shami is making a strong case for his inclusion. He last played tests for India in 2023 and has been out of the ODI setup since 2025. However, his recent display, taking five wickets for just 59 runs across two innings for Bengal, highlighted his sustained skill and fitness.
In the opening Ranji Trophy match of the 2026 season against Delhi, Shami bowled 35.3 overs, delivering a commanding performance that helped Bengal secure a crucial win. With figures including 4 for 30 in the first innings, he demonstrated ability to influence matches decisively even after a break from international cricket.
The strong performance has complicated the selectors’ decision, making Shami’s omission from the touring squad difficult to justify. Former chairman MSK Prasad openly supported Shami’s inclusion, reminding everyone of his consistent impact in major series in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Prasad emphasized that Shami's recent domestic success should be rewarded with an opportunity in the upcoming New Zealand tour.
Shami’s recent form signals a possible end to his India exile. His performances offer a promising prospect for the Indian bowling attack ahead of the challenging New Zealand series scheduled from November to December. The cricketing community awaits the final squad announcements with interest, as Shami’s inclusion would add experience and versatility to the team.
