The opening day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 was the batting carnival with centuries flying in all directions and domestic records tumbling. India's ODI legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who featured in the domestic ODI tournament after a long time, slammed sensational knocks, and young talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi set the tone for a tournament full of fireworks. A total of 22 centuries were scored on day one.
Vaubhav Suryavanshi's World Record
Vaibhav Suryavanshi stole the limelight in the Plate Group clash against Arunachal Pradesh, smashing 190 off just 84 balls to become the youngest List-A centurion at the age of 14. He smashed 16 fours and five sixes at a strike rate above 226, sharing the spotlight with his captain, Sakibul Jani, who scored 128* in 40 balls, and Ayush Loharuka’s 116 in 56 balls as Bihar posted a staggering 574/6 which is the highest total in List A cricket history.

Virat Kohli's record in the VHT opener
On the other hand, in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli marked his return to domestic cricket with a stylish 131 off 101 balls for Delhi against Andhra Pradesh. He smashed 14 fours and three sixes, guiding Delhi to a four-wicket win alongside Priyansh Arya (74) and Nitish Rana (77). With this knock, Kohli became the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 16,000 List-A runs and notched his 58th List-A century.

Rohit Sharma who made his VHT comeback after more than a decade, smashed 155* in just 94 balls to take Mumbai past Sikkim. He struck 18 fours and nine sixes at a strike rate of 164.89, while his partners Angkrish Raghuvanshi (38) and Musheer Khan (27*) enjoyed the ride from the non-striker’s end.
Centuries in Jharkhand vs Karnataka clash
The Group A clash between Jharkhand and Karnataka also provided fireworks. Ishan Kishan continued his red-hot form with 125 off 39 balls, including 14 sixes, while Virat Singh (88) and Kumar Kushagra (63) supported him to help Jharkhand reach 412/9. In response, Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal struck 147 off 118 balls, with Mayank Agarwal (54), Abhinav Manohar (56*) and Dhruv Prabhakar (40*) finishing the chase, completing the second-highest successful chase in List A history.
Other notable centuries included Swastik Samal’s 212 for Odisha against Saurashtra, Biplab Samantray’s 100, Dhruv Shorey (136) and Aman Mokhade (110) for Vidarbha against Bengal, Vishnu Vinod’s 102* for Kerala, and Prashant Veer’s fine contributions with the ball helping Uttar Pradesh restrict Hyderabad after Rinku Singh (67) and Dhruv Jurel (80) had given them a solid total.
In Group D, Pradosh Paul (73), N Jagadeesan (67) and Sai Sudharsan (48) helped Tamil Nadu post 310/7 before Gurjanpreet Singh’s four-wicket haul skittled Puducherry for 209. Punjab’s innings also featured big knocks from Prabhsimran Singh (60), Abhishek Sharma (48), Anmolpreet Singh (85), and Naman Dhir (97), taking them to 347/6 against Maharashtra.
