West Indies captain Roston Chase stated that his side will be hoping to replicate what New Zealand did last year when they toured India. This statement comes ahead of the Windies' first Test of the two-match series against the Men in Blue that is set to commence from October 2 at the Nareendra Modi stadium. Notably, the Black Caps became the first team to inflict a Test series whitewash over India on their home soil in 2024. They had defeated the Men in Blue by 0-3 and had completely dominated with the ball throughout the series.
Chase remarked that even though the team is currently not in great form when it comes to red-ball cricket, they are trying to learn from what New Zealand did and will be doing their best to defeat India and win the series.
“Obviously, we’re not in a good position right now in terms of our Test status and we are kind of low on the (World Test Championship) table, but we have to put that behind us," Chase said after training at the Narendra Modi stadium.
“New Zealand came last year and dominated India, so we are really trying to learn from what they did and put some of those things in place to play good cricket, compete, and try to win the series," he added.
Spinners will be crucial
Chase further stated that spinners will be key in the series against India and they will have to put in a lot of work in the spin-friendly conditions.
“The analyst sent us the footage of the New Zealand series and we zoned in on the critical points. I’ve played in India before and I know it’s spin-friendly conditions. More than likely, the spinners may have to bowl more of the overs and we’ve been putting in the work," Chase stated.
How many spinners have West Indies picked for the series?
West Indies have opted to go for a total of three spinners for the upcoming series. They have picked left-arm spinners Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre and will also be having Roston Chase as the part-time option. Despite the spin-friendly conditions in India, the Windies have opted to go for five pace options. They have seamers Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales and Jediah Blades in their squad and have also picked fast-bowling all-rounders Johann Layne and Justin Greaves.
