WPL 2023 Auction Highlights: Smriti Mandhana remains most expensive player, U-19 stars get big bucks too

The Women's Premier League (WPL) auction got off to a terrific start with marquee players getting big bucks. India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was the first to get picked in the auction for Rs 3.4 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after a bidding war with Mumbai Indians (MI). The Mumbai franchise were quick to pick their captain in the form of Indian skipper Haramanpreet Kaur for Rs 1.8 crore. 

There were few big names –  Danielle Wyatt, Suzie Bates, Laura Wolvaardt and others – that did not bag a WPL deal. A total of 87 players were picked in the auction including 30 overseas. USA's Tara Norris is the only player from an associate nation to get picked in the auction. UAE's teenager Mahika Gaur was she had the interest of Gujarat Giants but their quota of overseas players was full already.

The most expensive player turned out to be Australia's Ashleigh Gardner who was roped in by the Gujarat-based franchise for a whopping Rs 3.2 crore.
