Story Highlights:

UP Warriorz head coach Abhishek Nayar made the call to retire out Harleen Deol.

After the 17th over, everyone from UP Warriorz team management were on the same page.

In the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC), UP Warriorz (UPW) made the controversial call to retire out Harleen Deol before the last three overs of the innings. Harleen who was batting on 47 off 36 deliveries was in disbelief as she learnt about it. There was confusion in the middle as Harleen and Shweta Sehrawat wondered who is being called back to dugout. A disappointed Harleen dragged herself out of the ground as Warriorz coach Abhishek Nayar made the harsh call. In the end, it turned out to be a disaster for the Meg Lanning-led side.

In the 16th over, Warriorz had lost the wicket of their spinner Lanning who scored 54 runs from 38 balls. The following over was an economical one from Shafali Verma as he conceded just three runs. This led to Nayar making the call.

After the 17th over, Chloe Tryon failed to make the most of the call and lost her wicket of Shree Charani. In the penultimate over, no boundaries were scored either. Marizanne Kapp finished her quota of overs with the wicket of Sophie Ecclestone. Shafali bowled the final over and did not concede a single boundary. Sehrawat and Deepti Sharma lost their wickets as Warriorz managed to post 154/8. Only 13 runs were scored off the last three overs and four wickets fell.

In a last-ball thriller DC beat UP Warriorz by seven wickets. Lizelle Lee top-scored with a 44-ball 67. This was UP Warriorz’s third consecutive defeat. Meanwhile, DC opened their win account in the tournament.

Lanning on why Harleen was retired out on 47

In the post-match presentation, Lanning defended the decision to retire out Harleen.

“Chloe Tryon is a boundary hitter, and we felt like we wanted to maximize that as much as we could. Harleen batted extremely well, but it was getting harder to bat, and I guess, you know, got a little bit stuck there towards the end, as I did as well. So we make a decision based on what's best for the team. Unfortunately for Harleen, and that was what happened today, but, [I] stand by that decision. It didn't work today, but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But there was definitely method behind it,” the former Australia captain told the broadcaster.

Milestone achieved and missed by Harleen

Meanwhile, Harleen entered the list of batters with 500 or more runs in WPL history. From 23 games, she has scored 540 runs at an average of 28.42 and strike rate of 115.13. She has two fifties to her name. She neared her third half-century but was retired out by her team.
