Commonwealth Games 2026: India's day 1 results as Jhandu Kumar opens medal account

India wrapped up an eventful opening day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with Jhandu Kumar opening the country's medal account by clinching a bronze medal in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting event. While several Indian athletes narrowly missed the podium, there were encouraging performances across lawn bowls, swimming, boxing and gymnastics to keep India's campaign on track.

Jhandu Kumar wins India's first medal, lawn bowlers impress

India's first medal of the Games came through Jhandu Kumar, who secured bronze in the men's heavyweight para powerlifting category.

In lawn bowls, Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki continued their impressive run by defeating South Africa's Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui van Rensburg 2-0 in the women's pairs sectional round two fixture.

Putul Sonowal also registered a victory, defeating Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in the men's singles sectional round two contest.

India also made progress in boxing as Jadumani Singh successfully began his campaign in the men's 55 kg category with victory over Scotland's Aaron Cullen.

Mixed fortunes in swimming, gymnastics and powerlifting

Indian swimmers produced a mixed day in the pool. RVVBK Budigina and Ali Imam both qualified for the men's 100m freestyle S13 final after finishing third and eighth respectively in the heats. Budigina later finished fourth in the final, while Imam ended seventh.

In the men's 50m backstroke, Srihari Nataraj qualified for the semifinals after finishing fifth in his heat but narrowly missed out on a place in the final after ending seventh in his semifinal.

In powerlifting, Ashok Kumar Malik and Parmjeet Kumar finished fourth and seventh respectively in the men's lightweight category, while Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi ended sixth and seventh in the women's lightweight competition.

India's artistic gymnastics team, comprising Tapeshwarnath Das, Swathish KP, Tapan Mohanty and Yogeshwar Singh, completed their subdivision with team and individual qualification hopes depending on results from the remaining subdivision.

Meanwhile, Kasthuri Rajamani endured disappointment in the women's heavyweight powerlifting event after failing to register a successful lift.
