The residence of Arwinder Khosa, the president of Cricket Canada, came under attack after unidentified assailants allegedly fired shots at his house in Surrey, British Columbia, during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to local police authorities, the incident is believed to be linked to an extortion attempt. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the house being occupied at the time of the firing.

Police suspect extortion angle behind shooting

In an official statement, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) confirmed that officers responded to the incident around 4:40 AM in the Newton area of Surrey.

Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered visible damage to the property along with evidence suggesting multiple shots had been fired at the residence.

"The investigation is in its early stages; however, it is believed to be extortion related," SPS said in its official release.

The investigation has now been handed over to SPS’s Extortion Response Team (ExRT), while the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) has started examining physical and digital evidence collected from the scene.

Meanwhile, CBC News reported that Arwinder Khosa confirmed over a phone conversation that the targeted property belonged to him, although he refrained from revealing further details regarding the attack.

Cricket Canada facing multiple controversies

The shocking incident comes at a time when Cricket Canada has already been surrounded by several controversies in recent months.

A report published by CBC News earlier this year revealed that Canadian law enforcement agencies were investigating allegations involving gang-related threats directed at players associated with the Canadian cricket team.

The report also raised concerns regarding corruption, administrative issues, and potential match-fixing activities allegedly connected to individuals within the cricketing setup.

Additionally, the investigation reportedly explored possible links between cricket-related activities and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, while authorities in Delta, British Columbia, confirmed they were probing allegations involving "interference and threats related to cricket at both the provincial and national levels."

Due to the seriousness of the matter, the case was also reportedly referred to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for further investigation.
