Cristiano Ronaldo’s bid for World Cup glory ended in the round of 16 as Portugal fell to a 1-0 defeat against rivals Spain on Monday night at AT&T Stadium. The elimination also means that the Portuguese legend has played his last international football game. The Al Nassr striker had announced earlier that this would be his last World Cup no matter the result.

Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal late in the match, sending Spain through to the quarterfinals while eliminating the highly rated Portuguese side. Despite a competitive showing that included strong saves from goalkeeper Diogo Costa, Portugal struggled to create clear chances and could not break down a disciplined Spanish defense.

The Iberian derby pitted experience against youth, with 41-year-old Ronaldo leading Portugal and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal starring for the European champions Spain. Ronaldo’s long international career, which saw Portugal reach the semifinals in 2006 but never lift the World Cup trophy, concluded without a title.

Spain, meanwhile, advances with momentum after a solid tournament run, showcasing the depth and talent that made them Euro 2024 winners. They will now prepare for a quarterfinal clash as one of the favorites to go deep in the competition. The result marks another early knockout exit for a star-studded Portugal squad that entered the tournament with high expectations.
