The  Indian para-athletics community was left in shock on Wednesday after three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist Neeraj Yadav died by suicide at his flat in the capital on Tuesday night. The 42-year-old athlete, who competed in the F55 category, was suspected to have consumed poison, as per a report in the Press Trust of India. A post-mortem examination was underway at Delhi’s GTB Hospital.

India’s chief para-athletics coach S. Satyanarayana confirmed the news, describing it as extremely unfortunate and tragic. Paralympic champion Sumit Antil and fellow para-athlete Vipin Kasana were among those present at the hospital. The precise circumstances surrounding Yadav’s death remain under investigation.

Satyanarayana indicated that Yadav may have been under emotional distress after missing the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games 2026 because of a doping suspension. The coach, as quoted by PTI, said:

“He would have been looking forward to competing at these Games. Medals at the Asian Para Games can bring substantial government cash awards and opportunities for stable employment.”

Satyanarayana added:

“But his suspension had not ended, and he could not compete. It is possible that this affected him deeply, but we cannot say for certain what he was going through."

The timing of his death, coming as India fields a large contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, has deepened the sense of loss within the para-sports community. Officials and athletes have expressed grief while awaiting the full results of the post-mortem and any further police inquiries. Investigations continue into the circumstances of the death.

Yadav’s journey highlighted both the resilience required in para-athletics and the pressures that elite athletes can face, including the impact of sanctions, career interruptions and the high stakes of major competitions. His three Asian Para Games gold medals remain a significant part of India’s continental medal history in the F55 throws. As the para-athletics community processes the news, attention turns to supporting athletes through challenges beyond competition.

Yadav leaves behind a legacy of overcoming early adversity to reach the highest levels of Asian para sport. Further details are expected once official procedures are completed. Anyone experiencing distress is encouraged to seek help from local mental health resources or crisis lines. As everyone mourns the unfortunate death of the Indian athlete, here is a look at his achievements and the legacy he has left behind.

Who was Neeraj Yadav?

Born on 10 February 1984 in Uttar Pradesh and hailing from Ghaziabad, Yadav overcame significant physical challenges from an early age. Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis and neural damage at the age of seven, he lost significant function in his legs. His father had been a wrestler and volleyball player, fostering an early interest in sport. Yadav first competed in wheelchair tennis between 2005 and 2012 before switching to para-athletics.

A look at Neeraj Yadav’s career

Neeraj Yadav’s breakthrough came at the 2015 Delhi State Athletics Meet, where he won gold medals in the shot put, javelin and discus. He announced himself on the international stage at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, claiming gold in the men’s F55 javelin throw with an Asian-record effort of 29.84 metres. At the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou (held in 2023), he added two more gold medals: one in the javelin throw F55, and another in the discus throw F54/55/56 class, taking his career tally to three Asian Para Games titles. He also set national records and collected medals at events such as the Marrakech Para Athletics Grand Prix.

Neeraj Yadav and doping suspension

Neeraj Yadav’s career was later overshadowed by an anti-doping violation. An out-of-competition sample collected by the National Anti-Doping Agency in Bengaluru in October 2023 tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. He was provisionally suspended and later received a multi-year ban. He had sought DNA testing of his sample through the disciplinary process. The suspension prevented him from competing at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan, where Indian para-athletes have been performing strongly.

Teammates and the wider sports fraternity remembered Yadav as a determined competitor who rose from wheelchair tennis to the top of Asian seated throws. His achievements inspired many athletes with disabilities, particularly those from similar backgrounds in Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region. Government schemes often reward Asian Para Games medals with significant cash incentives and pathways to stable employment, making continental success especially meaningful for para-athletes seeking long-term security.
