21-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy announced himself on one of tennis’ biggest stages after stunning fellow American and World No. 9 Taylor Fritz in the opening round of the ongoing French Open 2026.
Making his Roland Garros main draw debut, the Indian-origin American defeated the seventh-seeded Fritz in a four-set thriller with a scoreline of 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
The victory marked the biggest win of Basavareddy’s young career and also made him the first American player since Jan-Michael Gambill in 2000 to defeat a top-10 player at the clay-court Grand Slam.
Basavareddy scripted history with stunning win over Taylor Fritz
Ranked 148th in the world heading into the tournament, Basavareddy entered the French Open main draw after winning the USTA’s Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge.
Facing an experienced player like Fritz in the opening round, the 21-year-old showed remarkable composure throughout the nearly three-hour battle.
Taylor Fritz, who arrived in Paris with limited match practice after spending nearly two months out due to a knee injury, struggled to handle Basavareddy’s fearless shot-making and consistency from the baseline.
Despite losing a tense third-set tiebreak, the young American responded brilliantly in the fourth set and wrapped up the match in dominant fashion.
Speaking after the match, Nishesh Basavareddy described it as the biggest victory of his career so far.
"What a match. Taylor's obviously a great player, so super happy to get through that, especially after losing the third set. First French Open main draw, and all the support, it's incredible."
With the victory, Basavareddy advanced to the next round where he could potentially face another young American, Alex Michelsen.
