Fakhar Zaman has suffered a significant setback after his appeal against a ball-tampering charge was officially dismissed, confirming that the Pakistan batter will serve a two-match suspension in the ongoing Pakistan Super League 2026 season.
The decision was taken following a detailed review by the PSL Technical Committee, which chose to uphold the original punishment imposed by match referee Roshan Mahanama after examining all available evidence.
PSL Technical Committee stands firm on decision
The controversy stems from a recent clash between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, where concerns were raised by on-field umpires regarding the condition of the ball in the closing stages of the game.
“The appeal was heard today by the PSL Technical Committee comprising Professor Javed Malik, Dr Mumraiz Naqshband, and Mr Syed Ali Naqi," the PCB said in a statement.
“Pursuant to conducting a de novo inquiry, reviewing all evidence, and hearing submissions from relevant individuals, the Committee has dismissed the appeal and upheld the two-match ban imposed by Match Referee Roshan Mahanama. In accordance with the Code of Conduct, any decision made by the PSL Technical Committee shall be the full, final and complete disposition of the matter and will be binding on all parties," it added.
The ruling effectively brings an end to the matter, with no further scope for appeal under PSL regulations.
Incident that triggered the controversy
The incident unfolded in the final over of the match, when the ball was passed between Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi, and Fakhar Zaman under close scrutiny.
Umpires suspected that the ball’s condition had been altered before it was returned to Rauf by Zaman, prompting immediate intervention and a decision to replace the ball.
Zaman was subsequently charged under Article 41.3 of the PSL playing conditions, which pertains to altering the condition of the ball to gain an unfair advantage. The maximum penalty was imposed by the match referee, underlining the seriousness of the breach.
Match impact and costly consequences
The situation had a direct impact on the outcome of the match. The umpires awarded a five-run penalty to Karachi Kings, significantly easing their chase.
Needing nine runs in the final over, Abbas Afridi sealed the win in emphatic fashion, striking a four and a six to guide Karachi Kings to a four-wicket victory at Gaddafi Stadium.
The incident not only influenced the match result but also sparked widespread debate over on-field conduct and discipline.
Qalandars dealt setback ahead of crucial fixtures
As a result of the upheld suspension, Fakhar Zaman will miss Lahore Qalandars’ upcoming fixtures against Multan Sultans on April 3 and Islamabad United on April 9.
His absence comes as a major blow for the Qalandars, who now face the challenge of navigating key matches without one of their most experienced batters.
