In what happens to be one of the most heartrending moments from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had a father-son moment with his son Liam, who was inconsolably in tears after Poland's defeat to France 3-1 on December 04 (Sunday). With this loss, Poland crashed out of the World Cup in Qatar which has indeed left many Polish fans distraught and Szczesny's son exemplified the sentiment of the whole country. Szczesny's son was moved to tears in a poignant video that was captured after Poland's exit from the World Cup in the Round of 16 at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday.

Szczesny spent nearly a minute consoling his son while hugging him and apologising for letting his number one fan down.

Watch the video here:

Olivier Giroud opened the account for France with his record-shattering 52nd goal, trumping Theirry Henry as Les Blues' all-time leading goal scorer on the stroke of halftime. The ever-present Kylian Mbappe netted a brace and added the fifth goal to his tally in the showpiece event. Robert Lewandowski scored Poland's only goal but it was a conciliatory one in stoppage time.

Szczesny is the only goalkeeper in the ongoing FIFA World Cup who saved two penalty kicks, one against Saudi Arabia and the other against Argentina, denying Lionel Messi from the spot.

Szczesny’s told the story of how he bet Messi during a lengthy video review that the penalty wouldn’t be awarded, only adding to his quirky time in Qatar.

“I told would bet him €100 that he (referee) wasn’t going to give it,” Szczesny told TV2.

“I don’t know if that’s allowed at the World Cup - I’m probably going to get banned for it! But I don’t care right now,” said Szczesny, who would save that penalty, diving to his left, and punching the ball with his raise right first.

Now his off-field display of fatherly love earned plenty of new admirers.
