Egypt have secured a historic victory in the Round of 32, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Following the win, they have now advanced to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time. 

Emam Ashour gave the Pharaohs an early lead with a clinical header in the 13th minute at AT&T Stadium. Australia equalized in the 55th minute through an own goal by Egypt's Mohamed Hany, forcing the match into extra time where neither side could find a winner.

In the shootout, Egypt held their nerve. Mohamed Salah coolly converted his penalty, including a notable Panenka-style effort, while Australia faltered, with Harry Souttar missing and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan unable to stop Egypt's clinical finishing. Egypt prevailed 4-2 to reach the knockouts of the tournament co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada. 

The win marks Egypt's first-ever success in a World Cup knockout match, sparking celebrations across Africa. They will now face a challenging Round of 16 matchup, likely against strong opposition such as Argentina, as they continue their landmark campaign in the expanded tournament.
