In a stunning series of events, England closely avoided an exit from the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, as they managed to secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over DR Congo in their Round of 32 clash on Wednesday, July 1 at the Atlanta Stadium. Thomas Tuchel's men fought like lions against DR Congo, who delivered a masterclass performance in defence.

The cagey first-half

The first-half of the game belonged to DR Congo, who surprised the European Giants by taking the lead after just seven minutes. Capitalizing on a disorganized England defense, Brian Cipenga found space inside the box and precisely beat Jordan Pickford at his near post. A rattled England faced struggles to build momentum, failing to register a meaningful threat until Jude Bellingham forced a save with a header in the 30th minute. Dr Congo almost doubled their lead before half-time when Yoane Wissa hit the crossbar from close range after an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross.

England's comeback in the second-half

Former Chelsea manager Tuchel turned the game with his key tactical adjustments, introducing Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka to inject life with his fresh legs. The tactical shift yielded results in the 75th minute when Gordon floated a perfect cross into the box for Kane, who rose to the highest to bullet home a header and draw England level.

With momentum firmly on their side, England completed the comeback ten minutes later as Gordon provided another assist, setting up Kane on the edge of the box to score a brilliant goal. The late brace from the skipper broke Congolese hearts and ultimately guaranteed the Three Lions safe passage into the Round of 16.

What is next for England

After a close win over DR Congo, England will face Mexico in the Round of 16 stage on Monday, July 6 at the Mexico City Stadium in Estadio Azteca. It will be a tough game for the Three Lions as it clearly looks that they struggle a lot with their progression against low-block teams.
