From Messi to Modric? List of football legends who may have played their final World Cup

The curtains may have finally come down on one of the greatest generations in football history.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 now in the books, several iconic stars who have defined the sport over the past two decades are unlikely to feature when the tournament returns in 2030. While a few have not officially confirmed their international retirements, age and the natural progression of their careers suggest this was probably their final appearance on football's biggest stage.

From Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to Luka Modric and Neymar, here is a look at the legendary names who may have bid farewell to the FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Lionel Messi, now 39, has achieved almost everything the game has to offer. The 2022 World Cup winner made his tournament debut in Germany in 2006 and went on to become one of the greatest players in World Cup history, scoring 21 goals across his appearances. Having completed his sixth World Cup campaign in 2026, it is widely expected that Messi has played his final match on football's grandest stage.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Cristiano Ronaldo also began his World Cup journey in 2006. Although he lifted almost every major trophy in club football, the World Cup remained the one title that eluded him. The Portuguese superstar finishes with 11 World Cup goals, while Portugal's fourth-place finish in 2006 remains his best result. At 41, another World Cup appearance appears highly unlikely.

Luka Modric (Croatia)

The "Croatian Cruyff," Luka Modric leaves behind an unforgettable World Cup legacy. Making his debut in 2006, the midfield maestro inspired Croatia to a historic runners-up finish in 2018 and another deep run in 2022. At 40 years of age, the veteran, who scored two World Cup goals, is expected to have played his final tournament.

Neymar (Brazil)

Brazilian superstar Neymar gave everything in pursuit of football's biggest prize but never managed to lift the famous trophy. After debuting in 2014, he scored nine World Cup goals and consistently carried Brazil's attacking hopes. Now 34, the Selecao icon is unlikely to feature in another World Cup.

Son Heung-min (South Korea)

South Korea's talisman Son Heung-min first appeared at the World Cup in 2014 and established himself as one of Asia's greatest footballers. The Tottenham forward scored three World Cup goals, and at 34, the 2026 tournament could mark his final appearance.

Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)

Belgium's golden generation may finally have reached its end. Kevin De Bruyne debuted at the World Cup in 2014 and became one of the finest midfielders of his era. With three World Cup goals to his name, the 35-year-old is unlikely to return in 2030.

Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands)

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk had to wait until 2022 to make his World Cup debut. Despite scoring one goal, the commanding defender became one of the tournament's standout centre-backs. At 35, his World Cup journey may now be over.

Casemiro (Brazil)

Brazilian midfield general Casemiro first featured at the World Cup in 2018 and played a crucial role in shielding the Selecao defence. The 34-year-old finishes with two World Cup goals and is another player expected to step away before the next edition.

Manuel Neuer (Germany)

One of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, Manuel Neuer revolutionised the sweeper-keeper role and lifted the World Cup with Germany in 2014. After making his debut in 2010, the veteran goalkeeper is now 40 and appears set to end his World Cup journey.

James Rodríguez announced himself to the world at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, winning the Golden Boot after scoring six memorable goals. Now 35, the Colombian playmaker may have made his final appearance on the biggest stage, closing the chapter on an outstanding World Cup career.
