Mexico advances to World Cup Round of 16 with 2-0 victory over Ecuador; who will they face next?

Mexico has reached the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The co-hosts delivered a dominant performance, defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 at Estadio Azteca to secure their first World Cup knockout-stage win in 40 years. 

Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a clinical finish on a counterattack, firing home a fierce shot that sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy. Raul Jimenez doubled the lead just nine minutes later, capitalizing on a mishit clearance to cut inside and slot the ball past the goalkeeper.

Mexico controlled the match from the outset, maintaining a solid defense that preserved their fourth consecutive clean sheet of the tournament. The game faced a roughly one-hour delay due to a storm in Mexico City, but the home side emerged unfazed, finishing with four wins from four matches and an impressive goal difference. 

Ecuador, who battled valiantly despite the deficit, saw defender Piero Hincapie sent off late in the match. The result eliminates the South American side while propelling El Tri into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of England versus DR Congo. The victory marks a historic moment for the national team and boosts expectations as the tournament progresses on home soil.
