Inter Miami were taking on Al Ahly in the opener of 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The match between Inter Miami and Al Ahly ended in a goalless draw.

In a match where all eyes were expected to be on Lionel Messi, it was another Argentine who stole the show for Inter Miami in their Club World Cup opener. It was none other than their veteran goalkeeper Oscar Ustari.

Oscar Ustari: Hero between the posts

The 38-year-old shot-stopper delivered a standout performance as Inter Miami battled Egypt’s Al Ahly to a 0-0 draw in the Group A opener. Ustari made an impressive eight saves, including a dramatic penalty stop and a vital goal-line clearance that kept the MLS side in contention.

The moment of the match came just before halftime. Ustari denied Egyptian forward Trezeguet from the spot, then immediately recovered to clear the rebound before Al Ahly could capitalize. Earlier, in the 33rd minute, he showed lightning reflexes to deny a powerful header that seemed destined for the back of the net.

A long-awaited return to the world stage

This appearance marked Ustari’s first on a FIFA World Cup platform since lifting the U-20 World Cup in 2005, ironically, alongside current captain Lionel Messi. His return, under the revamped Club World Cup format, added a layer of sentiment and redemption.

I remember being retired and knew that my return would come on a field, so I’m very happy about it (being back), Ustari reflected post-match. I don’t like to talk about myself. The team did a great job defensively and that is what I most care about.

From controversy to redemption

Before joining Inter Miami as a free agent in September 2024, Ustari captained Mexican side C.F. Pachuca, a fellow Club World Cup participant. His tenure ended amidst controversy due to FIFA’s removal of sister club Club Leon, owned by the same parent group from the tournament, a decision upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Ustari had logged 124 appearances for Pachuca and a brief stint at Audax Italiano in Chile’s top division before finding a new chapter in Miami, where he has now played 22 matches, including eight in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Praise from teammates

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez was quick to acknowledge the impact of both goalkeepers but especially his teammate.

We didn’t think their keeper would make so many saves; he was the key player in the game along with Oscar in the first half, Suarez said. That shows that goalkeepers can earn you points as well.

Inter Miami will next take on FC Porto on Friday, June 20th.
