Palmeiras seek round of 16 qualification with disciplined performance against Inter Miami.

As Palmeiras gear up for a high-stakes clash against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the FIFA Club World Cup, manager Abel Ferreira has revealed his tactical trump card—17-year-old sensation Estevao Willian, affectionately known as “Messinho.” The teenage prodigy, who is set to join Chelsea this summer, has already lit up the tournament with back-to-back Player of the Match performances. But on Monday, his biggest test yet awaits.

Estevao Willian meets his idol Lionel Messi

Estevao, often compared to Messi for his dribbling finesse and left-footed wizardry, is expected to line up against the Argentine legend at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. But while the moment is monumental, Ferreira has issued a stern yet supportive reminder to his young star.

“Honestly, I hope he [Estevao] is totally focused on what he has to do and doesn't just look at and admire the other [Lionel Messi]. That's what I hope (laughs),” Ferreira told reporters ahead of the match.

With both teams needing only a draw to secure their spots in the round of 16, the showdown promises a blend of tactical discipline and individual brilliance. Abel Ferreira believes that Estevao Willian’s mental maturity—despite his age—is what sets him apart.

“Estevao is a youngster who has above-average competitive maturity, which is why he's already sold (to Chelsea),” the Palmeiras boss added.

The Strategy: Admire later, compete now

Ferreira emphasized that his side, especially Estevao, must maintain tactical discipline and contribute defensively to handle the dynamic threat posed by Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates.

“I hope we play a great game in attack and defence. He'll have to be committed defensively, given the dynamics of our opponent,” said Ferreira.

Despite the emotional weight of facing his idol, Abel Ferreira encouraged Estevao Willian to postpone any fan moments until after the final whistle.

“At the end of the game, if Estevao has the opportunity and wants to ask for an autograph or a photo, that's no problem (laughs). But for the 90 minutes, he must stay focused on his task, which is what I believe he will do.”

Clash of generations

The upcoming fixture isn’t just another game—it’s a symbolic encounter between two footballing generations. On one end stands Messi, a global icon nearing the twilight of his career; on the other, Estevao Willian, a rising star with the world at his feet. Abel Ferreira believes that simply sharing the pitch with Lionel Messi is a milestone in itself.

“In the end, he will have the opportunity to say that he played against one of the greatest in the history of world football. That is undeniable.”

All eyes will be on how well the Palmeiras wonderkid handles the pressure—and possibly, the player he’s long admired.
