Jose Mourinho to return to Real Madrid? Huge update on Benfica boss

Mourinho has been selected as a strong replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa, with club president Florentino Pérez set to make the final decision personally, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Portuguese coach, currently at Benfica, is one of four candidates under consideration as Real Madrid evaluates its options amid an uncertain season under interim coach Arbeloa.

Mourinho, who previously managed Los Blancos from 2010 to 2013, has reportedly made his desire for a comeback clear to those close to him, and the club is already aware of his ambitions. Pérez's personal involvement underscores the significance of the appointment for the Spanish giants.

Benfica are keen for Mourinho to remain in Lisbon, where he has a contract until 2027. However, his deal includes a €6 million gross release clause that is only valid until the final days of May, roughly 10 days after the Portuguese club's expected end to the domestic season. This narrow window adds urgency to any potential move.

Real Madrid's managerial situation has been fluid. Xabi Alonso's tenure ended by mutual consent in January 2026 after a brief and challenging period, leading to the promotion of B-team coach Álvaro Arbeloa. While Arbeloa delivered some positive results initially, questions persist about the long-term direction, with the team reportedly trailing rivals in La Liga.

Mourinho's potential return would bring his trademark intensity and experience to a squad featuring stars like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. Whether Pérez opts for the "Special One" or another candidate will likely shape Real Madrid's approach heading into the next campaign. Benfica, meanwhile, hopes to retain its manager beyond the clause's expiry.
