Amid the rumours of getting replaced by Xabi Alonso, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has finally found some backing, as club icon Steven Gerrard believes in the potential of the Dutch tactician.
Steven Gerrard backs Arne Slot
In an interview with The Overlap, Steven Gerrard has expressed his support in favour of Arne Slot, as he believes that the Dutch coach deserves another season to prove his metal at the Anfield, as it is very tough to win titles every season.
"He has with me because I know more than anyone on the planet how difficult it is to win a league, and for him to come in and win a league, in his first season, he’s got a lot more credit with me. Jamie will tell you, Liverpool will demand, they expect to win it every year. I think he needs the opportunity to play his way out of trouble and fix the issues and try and get himself back in a good place," said Gerrard.
Gerrard also noted that by winning the Premier League title in his very first season, Arne Slot has earned himself another season, as he managed to get a little bit of positive momentum despite going through a difficult time.
"I think he did during that period a few months ago where they’d lost nine out of 12 and then they went on a run where he took them from 12th to fourth in the league. I think someone who has won a league deserves at least a full season to try and get out of the problems and issues that they’ve got, I’m certainly one of them. But, I have to understand what the fans are saying as well, because it has been dire on certain games and performances," added Gerrard.
“But, as a Liverpool fan, and someone who has been an ex-player and knows a little bit on the inside than what most normal punters would know, these Liverpool fans, once it gets to this stage, it’s very difficult to get them back around. From my own personal experiences and what I have seen, it’s very difficult to get them back around," concluded Gerrard.
Liverpool's difficult 2025-26 season
Currently, Liverpool stand at the fifth place in the Premier League standings with 49 points in hand after 31 games. If the Reds manage to stay in the same position, then they would have to compete in the UEFA Europa League, which would be a downgrade.
