In a scintillating football showdown, Anwar Ali emerged as the hero for Mohun Bagan Super Giant, netting twice to secure a 3-1 victory over Machhindra FC. This triumphant performance came on Wednesday, ensuring the team's spot in the South Zone playoffs of the AFC Cup.

Up next for Mohun Bagan is an anticipated face-off against Abahani Limited Dhaka on August 22. The Bangladesh team advanced to this stage courtesy of their 2-1 triumph against the Club Eagles of Maldives in another gripping preliminary round contest.

Anwar Ali, recognized as a sturdy center back for India, showcased his skill by converting Hugo Boumous's corner into a powerful header goal in the 38th minute. This gave the Mariners an edge, breaking the deadlock against Machhindra FC.

Adding to the team's tally, Australian World Cup player Jason Cummings, marking his debut this season for Mohun Bagan, landed a left-footed strike into the net in the 59th minute. However, the relentless spirit of the Kathmandu squad was evident when they narrowed the scoreline with a goal from their Cameroonian midfielder, Messouke Oloumou, in the 78th minute.

The sealing moment arrived when Dimitri Petratos brilliantly crafted a right-footed cross from a free-kick, setting up Anwar Ali for his second header goal.

Despite the victorious outcome, the aftereffects of their previous derby loss loomed large, with a modest attendance of 5,892 spectators. Under the guidance of Coach Juan Ferrando, Mohun Bagan rolled out with their star signing, Cummings, paired with dynamic Indian midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad.

While the team exhibited a few sparks of brilliance, some missed opportunities, especially from Cummings, kept the fans on edge. Goalkeeper Bishal Shreshtha from Machhindra FC became a wall, deflecting numerous strikes, keeping his team in the game.

Mohun Bagan's aggressive play was evident right from the start. Ashique Kuruniyan's early shot missed the mark, and Sahal Abdul Samad too experienced a couple of missed opportunities. The home team's momentum faced another challenge when ace midfielder Kuruniyan had to exit due to an injury post their second goal.
