Liverpool have faced a big blow as their new summer signing, Jeremy Jacquet, has picked up a serious shoulder injury.

Big injury for Liverpool

Jacquet, who is set to join Liverpool in the summer, was playing for Stade Rennes on Saturday but was forced off in the 69th minute after landing awkwardly a few minutes earlier.

At the time, Rennes were down 2-1 against 10-man Lens and would go on to concede a third goal after the defender was forced off. Jacquet seemed to be in pain and had to be escorted off the pitch by Stade Rennes' medical team.

“For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid [Ait Boudlal, the other Rennes player injured], it's muscular,” Rennes head coach Habib Beye said in his post-match interview. “We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them.”

On Monday, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Jacquet that will see him complete the remainder of the season in Ligue 1 and move to Anfield in the summer on a long-term contract. As per reports, the deal is worth £60 million, with the Reds paying a fixed £55 million plus a potential £5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Upon signing for Liverpool, Jacquet said in a statement shared on his behalf by Rennes:

“I am honoured to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world. It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart. I'm approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my teammates and the fans.”

The defender has played 21 games for Rennes this season but not face a lay-off.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on Jacquet

Arne Slot on Thursday talked about the future of Jacquet to his squad ahead of Liverpool's Premier League game against Manchester City. The Dutchman said he was happy with the signing and appreciated the Frenchman.

He said:

“Very pleasing, of course, because first of all he is a very big talent – and maybe even more than ‘only’ a talent, but we speak about talent because of his age, of course. Second of all because we weren’t the only one interested in him, so another big compliment for the people that are working every single day so hard to sign players, that we were able to sign such a big talent.

“And [it is] another example of the model we are using at this club: so, young, very talented players, sometimes in the start of their career, sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career, but always players that are young and can improve us and help us for the short, but definitely also for the long term.

“We have signed a lot of them recently and I’ve said many times that the mid- to long-term, but even the short-term, future of this club is in a very, very, very good place.”

Liverpool saw off competition from Domestic rivals Chelsea for the signature of the 20-year-old.
