Former Liverpool and Manchester United forward Michael Owen has slammed Chelsea striker Liam Delap over his mixed performance in their win against Burnley. The 22-year-old striker started for the Blues as they visited Turf Moor and claimed a third consecutive league win.
Michael Owen calls Liam Delap selfish
In an interaction with Premier League productions at the half time, Owen described Delap's actions as selfish. He mentioned a particular sequence that left him frustrated at the decision-making of the former Ipswich Town striker but said that there's a lot to like about the youngster.
A mixed bag, I feel. I quite like this lad, I do feel he’s got quite a lot to offer, I do think he is quite raw and he can get better. I do think in this situation he needs to be a little bit more unselfish, he probably could have passed it a couple of times. If he plays this ball in [to Pedro Neto] and makes a run to take the defender away, he will leave Neto with a one-on-one in this area. I think he’s got to do that instead of being a bit selfish and thinking he’s going to score a goal on his own. He takes a pot-shot from 25 yards and it’s not great", he said (via metro.co.uk).
Liam Delap played for 67 minutes, before Malo Gusto replaced him. Marc Guiu came off the bench to lead the attack in the dying stages and ended up giving assist to Enzo Fernandez for their second goal.
Delap is still waiting for his first goal for Chelsea in the 2025-26 season, having joined the side in the summer for £30 million. He scored once for the club in the FIFA Club World Cup, and spent two months on the sideline because of a hamstring injury.
Chelsea secure second position on Premier League standings
Chelsea secured a comfortable 2-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor to claim second place in the Premier League. The Blues picked up a third consecutive win and clean sheet, a feat that had to be matched in four years from 2021.
Chelsea's Pedro Netto started the scoring in the 37th minute through an excellent header after a great cross from Jamie Gittens. The Blues doubled their lead in the dying stages through Enzo Fernandez, who drilled home from inside the box following a cutback from Marc Guiu.
Chelsea controlled the game against the Clarets as they maintained a sixth clean sheet in the league this season. The Blues are now only three points behind table toppers Arsenal, who have played a game less.
