Enzo Maresca confirms Rodri back surgery as Manchester City prepares for new era

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that star midfielder Rodri will undergo surgery on a back problem this Monday. The player is just coming off helping Spain win its second World Cup title, defeating Argentina 1-0. But ahead of the upcoming club football season, the Sky Blues star has to undergo back surgery.

Speaking at a press conference, the Italian coach said:

“Rodri will have surgery on a back problem on Monday. He needs holiday, he needs to rest, recovery, and then he will be back here with us.”

Maresca added that “every manager wants to have Rodri, because he’s a top player,” while dismissing speculation linking the Spain international with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

The 30-year-old, who captained Spain to 2026 World Cup glory and claimed the Golden Ball, has battled injuries in recent seasons, including a significant ACL issue. The back surgery, which had reportedly been postponed to allow him to play in the tournament, comes as City transition under Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola and managed at Leicester and Chelsea, expressed confidence in Rodri’s return after proper rest. No exact timeline for his comeback has been confirmed, though reports suggest he could miss the early weeks of the new Premier League season.
