Few rivalries in sports history have captured the imagination of fans quite like that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Together, they redefined modern football, raised the standards of excellence, and inspired countless young talents across the globe.

Between them, the Argentine and the Portuguese great have collected a staggering 13 Ballon d’Or titles, setting the benchmark for greatness over nearly two decades. While their head-to-head battles have dwindled in recent years, the impact of their rivalry remains timeless.

Messi on Ronaldo: “A Beautiful Time for Football”

In a recent interview shared via the Official Ballon d'Or X account, Lionel Messi opened up about the intensity and respect that defined his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It was always a battle,” said Messi. “In sporting terms, it was very beautiful. We pushed each other to be better because we are both extremely competitive. He always wanted to win everything, and so did I. It was a beautiful time for us and for people who love football.”

Messi, who rose through the ranks of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, holds a record eight Ballon d'Or awards (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2023). Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s trophy cabinet boasts five Ballon d’Or wins (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017).

 The Rise of a Rivalry

The seeds of this legendary showdown were planted in 2008, when Ronaldo, then at Manchester United, edged Messi to win his first Ballon d'Or. But it wasn’t until 2009, following Ronaldo's blockbuster move to Real Madrid, that the rivalry truly erupted on the world stage.

For the next decade, the two giants of the game went head-to-head in El Clásico, the most iconic club fixture in world football. Between 2009 and 2018, they dominated the Ballon d’Or podium, splitting 10 titles and captivating fans with their relentless pursuit of greatness.

 A Legacy Beyond Trophies

While the numbers are mind-blowing, it’s their longevity and consistency that set Messi and Ronaldo apart. Messi netted 672 goals for Barcelona, claimed six European Golden Shoes, and shattered countless records. Ronaldo, the UEFA Champions League’s all-time top scorer with 140 goals, combined his athleticism and drive to remain elite well into his late 30s.

“He [Cristiano] always wanted to win everything and beat everyone,” Messi added. “I think it was a really beautiful time for us and for people who love football. What we achieved over such a long period has great merit because, as they say, it’s easy to reach the top, but the hard part is staying there.”

 A New Chapter Without Them?

A remarkable shift occurred in 2024, when for the first time since 2003, neither Messi nor Ronaldo featured among the Ballon d’Or nominees — a powerful reminder that a new generation is stepping forward.

What’s Next for Messi and Inter Miami?

Despite no longer competing in Europe, Messi continues to make headlines in Major League Soccer. His club, Inter Miami CF, currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 22 points. Under Javier Mascherano, they’ll look to extend their strong form as they prepare to host Orlando City this Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Chase Stadium.
