Lionel Messi scored the fastest goal of his career in Argentina's 2-0 win over Australia in a friendly game on June 15. Messi took just 79 seconds to get Argentina the lead. The no.10 Argentine scored his first touch of the match as he net one from the edge of the box. Now, Messi has scored in each possible minute of regulation time barring the first minute. It is also the first time Messi has scored in seven straight matches for Argentina, the World Cup 2022-winner’s longest international streak.
“We always enjoy being with the national team,” Messi said after the game. “It was complicated playing because of the heat and humidity, but above all we’ll continue with the same idea.
“Now there are World Cup qualifiers and the Copa America, it’s getting too ahead of yourself thinking about the next World Cup. You have to enjoy what you’ve achieved.
“We have to think about what’s coming, a new cycle is beginning. This continues, we can’t just sit back on what has already happened. We need to enjoy every reunion.”
Messi helps extend lead
The Socceroos could not make a comeback in the game. In the 68th minute, Messi gave a brilliant pass to Rodrigo De Paul who assisted the second goal as German Pezzella doubled the lead at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing.
Messi had more opportunities to score including the one where he was one-on-one against the goalkeeper but the shot went over. He had an opportunity to score from a free kick as well but the ball went just wide.
Fan moment
There was a security breach in the match as well when a fan entered the field and hugged Messi. At first, Messi looked surprised but then he put his arm around him before security guards moved in. The fan was not done yet and he ran across the field to high-five Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez was in awe of 35-year-old Messi who recently moved from PSG to Inter Miami as he said, “Messi has given us everything as a footballer, it’s a pleasure to see him play. He’s on another level.”
