Manchester United have lost yet another game as the horror story continues with the extension of their winless record to nine games. The Red Devils are such a dysfunctional mess right now as their latest loss came against Chelsea. The Blues’ 2-0 victory over Michael Carrick’s side at Stamford Bridge provided a clear snapshot of two clubs heading in very different directions this season.

Goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, either side of Lisandro Martínez’s red card, condemned United to a ninth consecutive match without a win in all competitions. That unwanted sequence is the club’s longest since 1988 and has left Carrick’s side staring at a genuine relegation battle after only nine Premier League fixtures. Rogers opened the scoring five minutes after half-time with a superb individual goal, collecting the ball in midfield, driving past United’s static defence and lifting a composed finish over the goalkeeper.
Manchester United horror! Is Premier League side really facing relegation battle? Winless streak extends after Chelsea loss
Moments later Martinez, already booked, needlessly raised an arm into Wesley Fofana’s face at a corner. A VAR review produced a second yellow card and a penalty, which Palmer converted for his 50th Premier League goal in Chelsea colours. United had been competitive in the first half and created several chances, yet their familiar second-half collapse left them powerless against a ten-man disadvantage and clinical opposition.
The result left Manchester United with just seven points from nine league games: one win, four draws and four defeats, with a goal difference of minus five. They sit 17th in the table, level on points with Crystal Palace but ahead only on goal difference, and a single point above the relegation zone occupied by Nottingham Forest and Sunderland. Their sole league victory came early against newly promoted Ipswich Town. Since then the results have been a catalogue of draws against mid-table sides and defeats to stronger opponents, including a heavy home loss to Bournemouth and this reverse at Chelsea.
Man United extends winless record to nine games across all competitions
The nine-game winless run stretches across both domestic and European competition. It includes losses to Manchester City, Brighton, Atletico Madrid, Como and Bournemouth, as well as draws with Fulham, Tottenham and Leeds. Such a prolonged drought has not been seen at the club for 38 years, when even Sir Alex Ferguson’s early side endured a similar barren spell. The difference is stark: while Ferguson’s team recovered, Carrick’s side currently shows few signs of the same resilience.
Defensive fragility, a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal and moments of individual indiscipline have combined to create a toxic mix. Carrick himself has attempted to downplay talk of relegation, insisting there is no particular stigma attached to finding themselves near the bottom three and that the only solution is to start winning matches. Yet the numbers tell a more concerning story.
United have managed only one league win all season and have now lost four of their nine Premier League fixtures. Their next fixtures offer little immediate relief: a Champions League meeting with Roma followed by a home Premier League clash against Aston Villa and a trip to Liverpool. Failure to take points from these games would deepen the crisis and almost certainly intensify speculation about the manager’s future. Historically, Manchester United have not been relegated since 1974.
The club’s size, resources and global profile make an actual drop into the Championship still appear unlikely to many observers. However, the early-season table does not lie. Seven points after nine matches places them firmly among the sides fighting for survival rather than challenging for European places. The squad contains quality Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and others have shown flashes of ability, yet collective confidence appears low and tactical coherence has been hard to find.
Chelsea, on the other hand, used the victory to climb into the top four. The result underlined the progress under their current coaching setup and the individual excellence of Rogers and Palmer. For United, the afternoon represented another step deeper into difficulty. The red card and the manner of the goals illustrated the thin margins and costly errors that have characterised their campaign.
Are Manchester United really getting relegated?
Whether this truly becomes a relegation battle will depend on how quickly the team can arrest the slide. History suggests big clubs usually find a way to climb clear once the season lengthens, yet the current form is alarming enough that survival cannot be taken for granted. Carrick’s immediate task is clear: he should work on restoring some defensive solidity, convert more of the chances his side still creates, and end the winless sequence before the pressure becomes terminal.
For a club of Manchester United’s level, sitting 17th in early November with a nine-match drought is an extraordinary and deeply uncomfortable position. The coming weeks will reveal whether they can respond or whether the 2026-27 season will be remembered as one of the most turbulent in their modern history. The team is set to face AS Roma next in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford. This will be followed by an EPL fixture vs. Aston Villa at home.
