The Spanish football community is in turmoil after a controversial incident involving the suspended federation president, Luis Rubiales. Andres Iniesta, Spain's iconic footballer, joined the chorus of voices condemning Rubiales' actions, labelling them as "damaging the image" of the sport in the country.
Rubiales forced a kiss on Jenni Hermoso's lips while celebrating Spain's title triumph in the Women's World Cup and then insisted it was consensual. Hermoso has made it clear it was not and has also said she’s been put under pressure to explain his actions.
Taking to his social media, Iniesta expressed, "After what has happened this week I would like to convey my sadness as a person, as a father of three daughters, as a husband and as a footballer" in relation to the Spanish women's national team situation. He emphasised that such actions, particularly after the monumental achievement of winning a World Cup, should not be tolerated.
Jenni Hermoso, the player at the heart of the incident, stated she never gave consent to Rubiales for the kiss following their triumphant 1-0 victory against England in Sydney. Rubiales defended his actions, describing the moment as "mutual, euphoric and consensual".
In a striking response, Hermoso, supported by 80 other players including the entire World Cup squad, declared they wouldn't play for the national team until there's a change in the RFEF leadership. The majority of the coaching staff for the women's team have also submitted their resignations.
RFEF's Sexual Violence Protection delegate stated on Sunday that an "investigation process" has been initiated. FIFA, the global football governing body, responded swiftly by suspending Rubiales for 90 days. The Spanish government is reportedly set to make a decision on their own suspension, possibly as early as Monday.
Iniesta further expressed, "Instead, we have had to put up with a president who has clung on to his position, who has not admitted that his behaviour has been unacceptable and is damaging the image of our country and our football around the world."
The wave of criticism against Rubiales extends beyond the football community. Hollywood actress Natalie Portman showed her support for Hermoso on Instagram. The RFEF, meanwhile, has defended Rubiales, asserting he will ensure "the truth prevails and his complete innocence is proven."
There are indications that Rubiales' complications might intensify. Reports suggest that the country's administrative court for sport (TAD) is set to meet and potentially extend his suspension based on serious charges that undermine sporting decorum. With an emergency meeting called by the RFEF, the upcoming days will be crucial in determining the next steps in this ongoing saga.
