England football legend Paul Gascoigne has voiced support for Mason Greenwood's return to the Premier League following the forward’s breakout season at Marseille.

Greenwood, who completed a £27 million move from Manchester United to Olympique de Marseille last summer, enjoyed a prolific first campaign in Ligue 1. The 23-year-old netted 22 goals across all competitions, including 21 in the league, finishing joint-top scorer alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele. His performances under manager Roberto De Zerbi were instrumental in Marseille’s qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Premier League interest rekindled

Greenwood’s red-hot form has not gone unnoticed back in England. As per The Telegraph, at least two Premier League clubs are reportedly considering a move to bring the former United striker back to England.

Although Greenwood now represents Jamaica internationally, sources suggest he is privately eager to return to English football, despite the controversy that surrounded his departure from Manchester United.

Controversial past still casts a shadow

Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in October 2022 after being arrested and later charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior. He denied all allegations, and in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.

The situation led to significant public scrutiny, and although United initially explored reintegrating Greenwood into the squad in 2023, the club ultimately decided against it, sending him on loan to La Liga side Getafe for the 2023/24 season.

Gascoigne calls for redemption

Paul Gascoigne, a former star of Newcastle, Tottenham, Everton, and other top-flight clubs, has urged English teams to offer Greenwood a second chance.

If he went abroad and he's more comfortable coming back and with the goals he's scoring, then yeah, come back, Gascoigne told Express Sport in partnership with pokerstrategy.com.

I don't know if he brings quite a bit of baggage. [But] if you're going take a gamble on him, take a gamble on him. You have got to give him a chance, even if it's just half a game.

Greenwood's future at a crossroads

While Greenwood is expected to remain at Marseille for their Champions League campaign, renewed interest from Premier League clubs could test both his and the French club’s commitment.
