UEFA starts investigation into 'racist' remarks made by Gianluca Prestianni against Vinicius Jr

UEFA has launched a formal probe after Vinícius Júnior accused Gianluca Prestianni of racist abuse during the Champions League clash between SL Benfica and Real Madrid.

A formal investigation into the recent accusations made by Vinicius Jr. against Gianluca Prestianni of Benfica has been initiated by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). During the first leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff match, the Brazilian winger accused the Argentine player of racially abusing him.

Gianluca Prestianni denies claims made by Vinicius Jr

The Argentinean footballer later released a statement in which he denied making any racist remarks about the star winger for Real Madrid. Additionally, he asserted that the Brazilian international had threatened him:

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to player Vinícius Junior, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard. I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”

 

 

UEFA starts investigation into the matter

In an official statement released on February 18, UEFA stated that they were awaiting the referees' formal report. UEFA has confirmed in a fresh statement that they have assigned an ethics officer to look into the entire incident:

“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of discriminatory behaviour during the UEFA Champions League 2025/2026 Knock-out Play-off between Club Benfica and Real Madrid CF on 17 February 2026.”

 

 

Benfica backs Prestianni amid online hate

Benfica has expressed confidence in its player by stating that they fully believe Prestianni's statements and that he did not use any racist language while playing.

During his post-match interaction, the Real Madrid striker addressed the situation to the media and demanded strong action against Prestianni. Mbappe said: 

 “Benfica are a top club, nothing against them… but Prestianni should NEVER play in UCL anymore.”

 

 

The 27-year-old striker added:

 “Did Prestianni apologize? Did you see his face? An apology? We’re not stupid, me and Vini… we saw what he said.”

 

 


Mbappe has said that he heard Prestianni call Vinicius “Monkey” and it happened “five times.” Meanwhile, UEFA has since opened an investigation into the incident.
