The game, which kicked off on time despite earlier concerns, was paused as lightning and heavy thunderstorms moved through the area. A large digital board inside the stadium warned fans of an approaching severe thunderstorm, prompting many spectators to seek shelter in the concourses. According to a statement by FIFA:
“Due to adverse weather conditions in Philadelphia, including the risk of lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq has been suspended.”

FIFA protocols for lightning require officials to wait at least 30 minutes after the last detected strike within an eight-mile radius before resuming play, with the clock resetting on any new strikes.
Talking about the match, Mbappé had given France the lead with a clinical long-range strike, further cementing his status as France's all-time leading scorer. France entered the match as heavy favorites and were dominating, while Iraq sought a historic upset. Play was resumed once conditions improved and safety was confirmed.
