FIH Pro Hockey League: After hammering Pakistan, India go down to England 1-4 in penalty shootout

After thrashing Pakistan, Indian men's hockey team suffered a 1-4 defeat to England in a dramatic penalty shootout after regulation time ended in a 2-2 deadlock in a tightly contested FIH Pro League encounter at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. While India's captain Harmanpreet Singh was the only visitor to find the net in the shootout, England's clinical execution carried them to victory. Thomas Sorsby, James Albery, and captain Zachary Wallace all successfully converted their attempts for the hosts, with Wallace additionally converting a penalty stroke awarded during the shootout.

England beat India 4-1 in penalty shootout

The regulation match itself was a highly competitive, back-and-forth affair. Dilpreet Singh was the standout performer for India, netting an impressive brace with goals in the 10th and 58th minutes. England's resistance was spearheaded by David Goodfield, who struck in the 29th minute, and Nicholas Bandurak, who momentarily put the hosts ahead in the 56th minute before Dilpreet's late equalizer rescued a draw for India.

The opening half set an edgy tone, characterized by missed opportunities and early defensive battles. India initially surged forward in the first quarter, earning a quick penalty corner, but Harmanpreet's dragflick was denied by English goalkeeper James Mazarelo. England responded with their own penalty corner in the fifth minute, only for the Indian defense to block Bandurak’s strike. India finally broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Mandeep Singh skillfully dribbled along the baseline and delivered a precise pass to Dilpreet, who expertly slotted the ball home with a diving finish.

India fail to capitalise on double advantage

The second quarter saw India nearly double their advantage when Amandeep Lakra unleashed a powerful dragflick from a penalty corner, only for England's Thomas Sorsby to pull off a heroic goal-line clearance. Capitalizing on that reprieve, the hosts found their equalizer just before halftime in the 29th minute. A sudden deflection sent the ball bouncing toward an unmarked David Goodfield in the center of the shooting circle, who smashed home a fierce volley to make it 1-1.

Following a grueling, scoreless third quarter where both defenses stood entirely resolute, the tension peaked in the final period. England seized control of possession, relentlessly pressing forward, but the Indian backline showed immense resilience under pressure. The breakthrough for the hosts finally came in the 56th minute when Nicholas Bandurak fired a precise, low dragflick from a penalty corner straight into the bottom right corner of the net.

However, England's late 2-1 lead was incredibly short-lived. Refusing to back down, India mounted a swift response just two minutes later in the 58th minute to equalize once again and force the game into a penalty shootout. In the decisive shootout, England proved clinical to secure a 4-1 victory and claim the bonus point. Sorsby and James Albery calmly converted England's first two attempts, while captain Zachary Wallace sealed the win by scoring both a penalty stroke and the final fourth attempt.

India will look for a quick turnaround as they prepare to face arch-rivals Pakistan on Friday (June 26) night.
