NHL legend Don Cherry expressed his support for Brad Marchand over Sam Bennett for the Conn Smythe Trophy. The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player in the NHL playoffs.
What did Don Cherry say about Brad Marchand?
The Florida Panthers secured their second Stanley Cup title on the trot after defeating Edmonton Oilers in six games. Marchand and Bennett were among the standout players for the Cats throughout their postseason campaign.
Both the players were in contention for the Conn Smythe Trophy, but ultimately, Sam Bennett's 15 goal contribution secured him the MVP honor.
On a recent episode of his 'Grapevine' podcast with his son Tim, Don Cherry felt that Brad Marchand should have been given the MVP award over Bennett, saying,
I thought Marchand was pretty good. Sure, give it to both of them. Marchand should have won.
Brad Marchand joined the Florida Panthers from Boston Bruins at the trade deadline. He notched up 20 points, including 10 goals, which involved three game winners, two in overtime and had the second highest plus minus rating on the team at +17.
Brad Marchand on his future at Florida Panthers
Brad Marchand will be entering free agency soon. Amid the Stanley Cup celebrations, Marchand expressed his desire to stay with the franchise.
He made one request to Florida Panthers GM Bill Zito, saying with a laugh
Give me a contract.
While there has been no deal between Marchand and the Panthers, insider Elliotte Friedman speculates that his next contract would fetch him $24 million.
Friedman feels that teams such as Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Utah Mammoth, LA Kings, New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals could be the possible landing spot for the veteran.
In his recent '32 Thoughts' column, Friedman wrote,
A few sources said he’d get at least $24 million on the open market. By the end, they were saying that was way too low. What you’re going to see here is different teams trying to hit the magic overall salary number, but at different terms and structures.
Brad Marchand was able to win his second Stanley Cup title after 14 years. He last won the Stanley Cup title with Boston Bruins in 2011.
