This achievement is incredibly rare; only 19 players in MLB history have reached this milestone, with just 30 occurrences since 1900. Ohtani's double in the eighth inning on Thursday secured his spot in this elite group, which hadn’t seen a member since 2001 when Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Todd Helton, and Luis Gonzalez all achieved it.
To put this into perspective, some of baseball's greatest sluggers never reached 400 total bases: Ted Williams (368), Mickey Mantle (376), Willie Mays (382), Ken Griffey Jr. (393), Albert Pujols (394), and Miguel Cabrera (377) all fell short. Mike Trout has never exceeded 339 total bases in a season.
Ohtani's pursuit of 400 total bases gained momentum in September. He ended August with 329 total bases and was on pace for 392. However, he caught fire, hitting .364 with an OPS of 1.201 since September 1. His standout performance included a remarkable 6-for-6 game against the Marlins on September 19, where he hit three home runs and added two doubles and a single, totaling 17 bases that propelled him to the MLB lead.

Ohtani's unstoppable feat
Shohei Ohtani made baseball history by becoming the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. The Los Angeles Dodgers star needed just one stolen base and two home runs to reach this milestone, and he accomplished it during a 20-4 victory over the Miami Marlins. Ohtani stole third base in the first inning, marking the first part of his achievement. He followed that up with another steal, bringing his total to 51, and then hit his 49th home run in the sixth inning, tying the Dodgers' single-season record set by Shawn Green in 2001. He then hit his 50th home run in the next inning, officially becoming the first player to achieve the 50-50 feat.
