Suresh Raina wants to be part of CSK's coaching set-up

Raina has admitted that he has informed CSK management about his aspirations

Affectionately nicknamed 'Chinna Thala' by the Chennai Super Kings faithful, Suresh Raina harbors aspirations of stepping into the head coaching role for the franchise he served with distinction over a 14-year (Indian Premier League) IPL career.

IPL is known for dramatic tactical shifts, heavy emotional ties, and high-stakes transitions. Few names resonate as deeply with the Yellow Army of CSK as Suresh Raina. Having retired from active professional cricket, Raina has openly thrown his hat into the ring for a coaching role within the franchise. Emphasising his lifelong commitment to the franchise, Raina openly confirmed that he has expressed his desire to join the CSK coaching staff to the team management, leaving the final call entirely in their hands.

I would love to work with CSK in any capacity: Raina

Raina’s desire to return to his spiritual cricketing home is rooted in his immense legacy with the franchise. Addressing his future involvement and the heavy transitions ongoing within CSK, Raina made his stance crystal clear:

"I've played almost 16 or 17 years in the IPL. I've scored enough for us (CSK), played in finals, and handled a lot of high-pressure games. I've asked them (CSK), and now it's on them to decide. It's their team now – we are both retired, so they have to make the call," Raina said on R Ashwin's Youtube channel.

Highlighting his readiness to contribute in any capacity required, Raina noted that designations do not concern him, focusing instead on mentoring the next generation through high-pressure scenarios.

"We've done our part, won trophies, and lifted titles together. Now, they need to see how we can contribute to CSK. I've been playing since day one, so if they feel I'm capable. I would love to work with them in any capacity! For me, as long as I’m with the boys and they’re winning trophies, that’s what matters – because yellow is everything to us," he added.

How have CSK fared in last three IPL seasons

Chennai Super Kings have experienced a turbulent phase over their last three campaigns, fluctuating between tactical reconstructions and difficult points table outcomes:

IPL 2024: Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK put up a competitive fight in the league stages, winning 7 and losing 7 of their 14 matches. However, due to a tight points table and net run rate permutations, they narrowly missed out on the playoff berths, finishing a respectable yet disappointing mid-table.

IPL 2025: The following season proved to be an even steeper uphill battle. The team struggled for momentum, registering more losses than wins across their 14 league fixtures, failing to find consistent rhythm with either bat or ball, and finishing in the lower half of the standings.

IPL 2026: The mounting challenges culminated in a difficult campaign where CSK managed only 6 wins against 8 defeats in their 14 matches, accumulating 12 points and ending up in 8th position on the points table. This rare finish outside the qualification zone prompted the franchise management to rethink its long-term strategic direction.

A complete overhaul in CSK’s coaching setup

Reflecting the urgency to bounce back from their recent struggles, CSK announced a massive, historic shake-up in their coaching and support staff ahead of upcoming seasons:

End of an Era: Long-standing head coach Stephen Fleming parted ways with the franchise after an illustrious 16-to-18-year partnership that yielded multiple trophies.

New Head Coach: Former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan was appointed as the new head coach to spearhead the team's technical and strategic rebuild.

Bowling and Assistant Staff: Former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma joined as the bowling coach, while former internationals Gareth Batty and Albie Morkel were brought on board as assistant coaches.

Departures: Alongside Fleming, several other support staff members, including long-serving batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons, exited the franchise, leaving distinct vacancies in the dugout as the management looks to blend modern analytical approaches with legacy DNA.

Why Suresh Raina’s experience could be blessing in disguise for CSK?

Integrating a figure like Suresh Raina into this newly formed coaching setup could bridge the gap between CSK's glorious past and its aggressive modern identity.

Raina played in numerous IPL finals and clutch knockout matches. His first-hand knowledge of handling the immense psychological weight of playing for Chennai would directly benefit younger batters. With the batting coach position remaining a point of evaluation following Mike Hussey's departure, Raina’s tactical understanding of spin-tackling, powerplay acceleration, and anchor roles is invaluable.

As a pillar of the franchise from its inception, Raina embodies the core ethos of the yellow dressing room. His presence alongside fresh coaching minds like Zaheer Khan would ensure that the traditional CSK winning culture remains intact amidst structural changes.

Suresh Raina’s illustrious IPL statistics for CSK

Overall IPL Runs: Across his distinguished career spanning 13 seasons (primarily with Chennai Super Kings), Raina accumulated 5,528 runs in 200 innings at an average of 32.52 and a strike rate of 136.73.

Out of his total tally, a massive 3,699 runs were scored exclusively in yellow for Chennai Super Kings, making him one of the franchise's all-time leading run-getters. Raina remains one of the most prolific performers in knockout history, holding a legendary record as one of the highest run-scorers in IPL playoffs.

He played a defining role in leading CSK to multiple titles (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021) and Champions League T20 triumphs, cementing his status as an immortal of the franchise.

Whether the franchise answers Raina's call to step into the dugout remains to be seen, but the prospect of Chinna Thala returning to shape the next generation of Super Kings has ignited immense excitement among fans.
