Liam Lawson’s time with Red Bull Racing has come to an abrupt end following a string of disappointing performances in the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Helmut Marko has confirmed that he recently had a phone conversation with Sergio Perez. While many speculated that the discussion might have revolved around the recent driver changes at Red Bull, Marko clarified that the topic was something entirely different.

Marko on His Chat with Perez

When asked by Formel1.de whether Perez had reached out to him, Marko simply replied, "Yes." However, he quickly dispelled any assumptions about the conversation's nature, stating, "We talked about tequila." The Red Bull advisor then laughed when the interviewer suggested that Perez might have been pleased following Liam Lawson’s replacement just two races into the season. Expanding on their conversation, Marko referenced Perez’s involvement in a tequila business and was asked whether a bottle was already on its way. "Not yet, but he said it is coming in Mexico," he responded humorously.

Looking Back at Perez’s Red Bull Signing

Marko was also questioned about Red Bull’s decision to sign Perez at the end of the 2020 season. At the time, the team had chosen to replace Alexander Albon, with speculation linking Nico Hülkenberg as another potential candidate for the seat. Reflecting on the decision, Marko explained, "Back then, Sergio Perez won his first Grand Prix. It was exactly during that period that the decisions were made. The majority chose Perez then." This referred to Perez’s triumph at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, which played a crucial role in securing his seat with Red Bull.

 Perez’s Future in Formula 1

Although Perez’s current stint with Red Bull is under scrutiny, a return to Formula 1 remains a possibility for the Mexican driver. He is reportedly being considered as a candidate for a seat at Cadillac’s new team, though other parties have also shown interest in his services. Addressing his career plans, Perez stated that he would take six months to decide on his next move.

Liam Lawson’s time with Red Bull Racing has come to an abrupt end following a string of disappointing performances in the 2025 Formula 1 season. Despite rumors swirling since the Chinese Grand Prix, it was officially confirmed that Yuki Tsunoda would take over Lawson’s seat starting from the Japanese Grand Prix. Lawson will now return to Racing Bulls, Red Bull's sister team, in an effort to regain his form and confidence.
