For the first time since 2018, a woman will compete in a NASCAR Cup Series race. Katherine Legge, a seasoned racer from England, is set to drive the No. 78 Droplight Chevy Camaro for Live Fast Motorsports in the Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway on March 9. This marks Legge’s debut in the Cup Series, making her the 17th woman to compete at this level in NASCAR history.

A Dream Come True

“Entering the NASCAR Cup Series is a dream come true,” Legge said in a statement. “I’m excited to team up with Live Fast Motorsports for Phoenix, and to represent our sponsors Droplight and Sherfick Companies.”

She added, “Racing stockcars has been an incredibly fun and new challenge that’s given me a renewed sense of vigor for this sport. As always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and am inspired by all of the effort, preparation, and behind-the-scenes work it takes to get here.”

Breaking Barriers in NASCAR

The last woman to compete in the Cup Series was trailblazing driver Danica Patrick, who made her final appearance in the 2018 Daytona 500. Patrick, who raced in 191 Cup Series events from 2012 to 2018 and 61 Xfinity Series races from 2010 to 2014, paved the way for women in NASCAR. Legge’s upcoming race continues this legacy of breaking barriers in the sport.

A Versatile Racing Career

At 44 years old, Legge brings a wealth of experience to the track. She has competed in the ARCA Series, made five starts in the Xfinity Series, and raced in the Indianapolis 500 four times, including the past two years. Her versatility and championship-winning background make her a standout addition to the Live Fast Motorsports team.

Live Fast Motorsports Embraces Opportunity

“We’re happy to partner with Katherine for this race,” said Jessica McLeod, Co-Owner and CEO of Live Fast Motorsports. “The opportunity to have such a versatile and dynamic championship-winning driver join our program is exciting for everyone on our team. This partnership reflects our commitment to providing opportunities for drivers making their way into the NASCAR Cup Series in the Next Gen era.”
