Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel is reportedly in discussions with Red Bull over a potential return to the team, this time off the track. The 37-year-old German retired from racing at the end of the 2022 season, following a two-year stint with Aston Martin. Since then, Vettel has made only occasional appearances at Formula 1 events, maintaining a low profile within the paddock.

While Vettel has previously steered clear of a racing comeback, he has remained connected to the world of elite competition. In May 2023, he took on a new venture as co-owner of the Germany SailGP team alongside Thomas Riedel. Now, fresh comments from the former champion suggest he may be eyeing a more strategic role within Red Bull’s driver development structure.

Dialogue with Marko sparks speculation

In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Vettel acknowledged recent rumors, revealing his ongoing conversations with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, 82, about a possible role at the team.

There have been a few headlines now, I still get along very well with Helmut, and we are also in exchange on the subject, Vettel said. These are not yet so intense, and in-depth, but it may be something where I can play a role, but in what form, it will show. But I have to admit that I haven't been close to F1 in the last few years.

Vettel has often been seen as a natural successor to Marko, the influential figure behind Red Bull’s young driver program. The German himself rose through that very system, eventually securing four consecutive world titles with the team between 2010 and 2013.

Respect for Marko’s legacy

Despite the speculation, Vettel was quick to express admiration for Marko’s enduring role within the organization.

I think Marko knows what he is doing, and no matter what happens, you can still learn a lot from him, he noted. Marko is not replaceable, and he has done a very large amount for the team since 2005, and it might not be the goal for someone to replace him. He is a brutal realist and can judge things quite well, and he will know when the time is right.

Life after racing

Since stepping away from F1, Vettel has dedicated more time to environmental and social justice causes. He has consistently advocated for Formula 1 to revise its calendar in order to minimize travel-related carbon emissions.

With 53 Grand Prix wins across a 16-year career, Vettel remains one of the sport’s most accomplished drivers—and his possible return to Red Bull could mark a significant new chapter in both his life and the team’s future.
