Commonwealth Games 2026: What is Lawn Bowls and will India compete?

Lawn Bowls may not enjoy the popularity of cricket, badminton or wrestling in India, but the sport has quietly emerged as one of the country's most successful disciplines at the Commonwealth Games in recent years.

India scripted history at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning its first-ever medals in Lawn Bowls. The women's fours team clinched a memorable gold medal, while the men's fours side secured silver, putting the sport firmly on the Indian sporting map.

With the Commonwealth Games 2026 set to be held in Glasgow, Lawn Bowls once again presents India with an opportunity to challenge for medals despite changes to the competition format.

What is Lawn Bowls?

Lawn Bowls is a precision sport where players roll specially designed asymmetric balls, known as bowls, towards a smaller target ball called the jack.

Unlike a normal ball, a lawn bowl is weighted unevenly on one side, causing it to follow a curved path instead of travelling in a straight line. This unique feature means success depends on technique, accuracy and tactical awareness rather than strength.

The sport is played on a flat, closely maintained grass surface called a green, which is divided into playing lanes known as rinks.

Traditionally, Lawn Bowls features four formats:

Singles
Pairs
Triples
Fours

A match is divided into rounds called ends. At the beginning of every end, the jack is rolled onto the green before players take turns delivering their bowls, aiming to finish closer to the jack than their opponents.

In singles, players usually continue until one competitor reaches 21 shots, while team events are played over a fixed number of ends, with the side scoring the most shots declared the winner.

Although the modern version of Lawn Bowls developed in Britain during the 19th century, its origins date back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Rome. The sport has featured in the Commonwealth Games since the inaugural edition in 1930, missing only the 1966 Games.

Will India compete in Lawn Bowls at CWG 2026?

Yes. India will compete in Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games 2026, although the tournament format has undergone significant changes.

Unlike Birmingham 2022, where India won medals in the fours event, Glasgow 2026 will feature only singles and pairs competitions. The triples and fours categories have been removed, while the competition will also be played indoors at the SEC Centre for the first time in Commonwealth Games history.

India has still named an experienced eight-member squad, with several medal winners from the previous edition returning.

Gold medal-winning star Rupa Rani Tirkey will compete in the women's pairs, while teammate Nayanmoni Saikia has been selected for the women's singles.

On the men's side, Navneet Singh, who won silver in Birmingham, will partner Dinesh Kumar in the men's pairs. The duo enters the Games with momentum after capturing the gold medal at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championships held in New Delhi earlier this year.

Despite the reduced programme, India's experienced squad and recent international success make Lawn Bowls one of the country's strongest medal prospects at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
