Gurindervir Singh's Commonwealth Games campaign ends with shock early exit

In a series of heartbreaking events, India suffered a big setback at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow after star sprinter Gurindervir failed to go beyond the heats of the men's 100m event. Gurindervir, who was considered as India's biggest medal prospect, his exit not only ended his personal campaign but also dealt a significant blow to India's hopes of adding another medal to its tally.

Disappointment for India at CWG

Before the Commonwealth Games, Gurindervir Singh came out as one of the biggest athletic stories in India. The 24-year-old etched history at the Federation Cup in Ranchi in May by becoming the first Indian sprinter to breach the 10.10-second barrier in the men's 100m, recording a sensational national record of 10.09 seconds. While doing so, he improved the previous national record by a margin of 0.06 seconds, a mark that Animesh Kujur had set just a day earlier in the semifinals.

Underwhelming performance from Gurindervir Singh

Despite carrying a big hype along with him, Singh's maiden appearance at the Commonwealth Games finished on a disappointing note, as he failed to deliver the performance many had anticipated.

During the heats, Gurindervir clocked 10.39 seconds, falling short of the mark required to qualify for the next round. With only the 17 fastest athletes across all heats advancing to the semifinals, the Indian sprinter finished 28th overall among 73 competitors. A time of 10.24 seconds would have been enough to claim a qualification, but the 24-year-old failed to produce the performance required on his debut appearance at CWG.
