Erling Haaland steps into the chess world

In a surprising crossover, Erling Haaland has joined the chess revolution by backing Norway Chess and its ambitious Total Chess Championship project. The Manchester City striker has partnered with investor Morten Borge to support the initiative, signaling a significant moment for the sport’s expansion.

Haaland shared his enthusiasm for the game, stating:

“Chess is an incredible game. It sharpens your mind, and there are clear similarities to football. You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead. Strategy and planning are everything.”

A new era for competitive chess

The Total Chess Championship, backed by Norway Chess and approved by FIDE, is set to redefine the competitive landscape. Featuring multiple formats, including Rapid, Blitz, and Fast Classic, the tour aims to crown a well-rounded world champion.

The competition will feature some of the biggest stars in the sport, like Magnus Carlsen, D Gukesh, Hikaru Nakamura, among others.

“I’m investing in Norway Chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world,” he said.
