India's Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medal-winning wrestler Aman Sehrawat has been disqualified from the World Wrestling Championships for being overweight on the morning of his bout on September 14.
The star wrestler was found 1.7 kg overweight during the weigh-in for the men's freestyle 57 kg category as per the PTI. However, a report by Sportstar claims that he forfeited due to illness. Sehrawat's coach, Lalit said that he fell sick after arriving in Croatia and did not go for the mandatory weigh-in.
"It's unfortunate and surprising that Aman could not maintain his weight. He was overweight by 1700 grams when he stood in the weight scale. This is not acceptable, actually. How did he get so much extra weight is beyond us," a source within the Indian contingent told PTI from Zagreb.
Sehrawat was scheduled to go up against Macedonia's Vladmir Egorov in his opening round clash.
One of the coaches with the Indian contingent expressed his disappointment with Sehrawat not being able to reduce his weight before the bout.
"You know, the government has spent at least 7-8 lakh on each wrestler selected for the World Championship in Zagreb. The stay expense was at least Euro 140 during the two-week training camp and it's Euro 200 during the tournament.
"It is the wrestler's responsibility to maintain weight. There has to be some explanation. Almost 2kg more than the permissible weight is unbelievable," said a coach with the Indian contingent.
Will Sehrawat face suspension like Sangwan?
Sehrawat had reached Zagreb on August 25 to acclimatise to the conditions. It is yet to be seen whether his disqualification leads to a similar fate as Neha Sangwan. In the women's 59 kg category at the World Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, she was found 600 grams overweight. As a result, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) dropped her from the team and handed her a two-year suspension.
Before Sangwan, it was India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat who was disqualified from Paris Olympics women's 50 kg final. Her disqualification was heartbreaking as she was 100 grams overweight. She could have scripted history even if she lost but it was heartbreaking end to her campaign.
