Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna is poised to achieve the coveted title of world number one in doubles, marking a historic milestone in his career. The government of India has acknowledged his outstanding contributions to the sport by conferring upon him the prestigious Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor in the country. This honor is bestowed in recognition of distinguished service across various fields.
At 43, Bopanna is set to become the oldest player to secure the world number one ranking when the updated doubles rankings are released on Monday. His consistent performance and remarkable achievements have earned him this esteemed position. Bopanna has the chance to clinch his first men's doubles major title at the Australian Open final, where he will partner with Matthew Ebden.
Having previously made history as the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam trophy, Bopanna secured the mixed doubles title with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski at the French Open in 2017. His prowess on the court has positioned him as a trailblazer in Indian tennis.
Joining Bopanna in receiving the Padma Shri is veteran squash player Joshna Chinappa, a 37-year-old athlete with an impressive track record. Joshna has not only excelled at the Asian Games, winning multiple medals, but has also secured two Commonwealth Games medals. Her accomplishments extend to the World Championships, where she has earned four medals in doubles, including a gold in 2022.
The list of Padma Shri awardees also includes hockey player Harbinder Singh, practitioner of Mallakhmab Uday Deshpande, accomplished archer Purima Mahtao, and para sports luminaries Gaurav Khanna, the para badminton coach, and Satendra Singh Lohia, a para swimmer. Each of these athletes is being honored for their significant contributions and achievements in their respective sports.
This recognition highlights the diversity and excellence within India's sporting community, honoring those who have brought pride and glory to the nation through their dedication and skill.
