Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has etched his name into the history books on Saturday. The Sri Lankan javelin thrower became the first athlete from his country to win a Diamond League title. The 23-year-old produced a best throw of 89.04 metres in the third round of the men’s javelin at the Diamond League Final in Brussels to claim victory at the King Baudouin Stadium.

Pathirage, the World No. 1, overcame a quiet start, opening with throws of 80.42m and 79.73m, before unleashing his decisive effort to take a lead he would not relinquish. Poland’s Dawid Wegner finished second with a personal best of 87.47m, while Trinidad and Tobago’s former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott took bronze with a season’s best 83.99m. Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters placed fourth with 83.70m.
The win crowned a remarkable 2026 season for Pathirage. He already holds the world-leading mark of 92.62m, set in Rome earlier in the year, and claimed Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow ahead of India’s Neeraj Chopra. He has dominated much of the Diamond League circuit this season.
The victory cements Pathirage’s status as one of the standout performers in global athletics this year and marks a landmark moment for Sri Lankan sport. Chopra had pulled out of the competition due to an injury, as the Indian icon’s season ended early. In his absence, Pathirage entered the final as the clear favourite.
