India’s star wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia announced on September 6 that they will contest Assembly Elections for Indian National Congress party. Punia confirmed to Aajtak that he and Vinesh will make the joint announcement at 2:30 PM on September 6.

The Haryana Assembly Elections will take place on October 5, 2024.

Last year, Bajrang and Vinesh protested at Jantar Mantar against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They protested the appointment of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI president after he won the elections. Bajrang is a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament as well.

Bajrang won the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020 but failed to make it to the Paris Olympics 2024 while Vinesh created history. She beat the Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki on her way to the gold medal round. However, she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight. Later, there was an appeal filed to give Vinesh the silver medal. The appeal was turned down by Cricket Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

Vinesh resigns from Indian Railways

“Serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud time of my life,” Vinesh wrote on her X account.

“At this point in my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of the Indian Railways. I will always be grateful to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation.”
