Rising star emphasizes balance and strategy over raw power.

Rising star Mirra Andreeva has offered a candid assessment of her playing style in comparison to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, drawing attention to the stark contrast in their on-court approaches.

Mirra Andreeva opens up on playing style

Speaking after her third-round win at the Miami Open, Andreeva addressed questions about her increasing power and aggression. While acknowledging improvements in her game, the young Russian made it clear that she does not intend to mirror Sabalenka’s high-risk, high-reward style.

“Well we’re trying to kind of find the right balance with that,” Andreeva said.

Comparison with Aryna Sabalenka’s power game

Sabalenka’s dominance in women’s tennis has largely been built on her aggressive baseline play and relentless hitting. However, Andreeva admitted that adopting a similar approach would not suit her game.

“Because I think that it’s not very good for me personally if I just try to be so aggressive like, I don’t know, like Aryna, that you know she hits every ball, I don’t know, 100 miles per hour and she just goes for it.”

Despite the comparison, Mirra Andreeva was quick to acknowledge Aryna Sabalenka’s success.

“I mean she’s playing great don’t get me wrong. I just have a different kind of game style.”

Finding the right balance

Instead of relying purely on power, Andreeva emphasized the importance of constructing points and maintaining control during rallies.

“So we’re trying to balance between where I can be aggressive and when it’s better for me maybe to stay in the point and just build a point, get the opponent tired, and then when she’s tired, I will just finish the point.”

Her approach reflects a more strategic style, prioritizing patience and timing over constant aggression.

“And I feel like that’s how I play. I just try to build the point, slowly but surely.”

Momentum building in Miami

Mirra Andreeva’s comments come amid a strong run at the Miami Open, where she has already secured multiple wins to advance further in the tournament. Her measured approach continues to yield results as she navigates a competitive field.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka remains one of the favorites in the draw, continuing to chase further success this season.
