The 38-year-old emphasizes short-term planning while balancing competition with exhibitions and recovery.

Novak Djokovic has finally shed light on his immediate ATP plans following the Shanghai Masters. The Serbian tennis legend, who made a surprise late entry into the Chinese tournament, confirmed that he will participate in only one more ATP event before the season closes.

During his pre-tournament press conference in Shanghai, Djokovic explained that his competitive calendar has been kept intentionally flexible in recent years. However, he gave a firm commitment to one upcoming event.

“Turin. Yeah, it is a tournament where I had quite a bit of success in the last years, I won it two times, and hopefully I can be back, let’s see,” Novak Djokovic said. “I don’t make plans long-term anymore. I’ve said that, I said that in New York. So after Shanghai, the only tournament I know I’m going to play is the one in Athens, and then let’s see if I play Turin or not, I’m not sure yet.”

Athens confirmed, Turin still uncertain

The 38-year-old revealed that his next official stop will be the Hellenic Championships ATP 250 in Athens. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to be hosted in Serbia, but organizers shifted the event to Greece, making it a new destination for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Despite having already qualified for the year-ending ATP Finals in Turin, Novak Djokovic has yet to decide if he will compete there. Last year, he withdrew from the prestigious event despite earning his spot, sparking speculation that he could repeat the decision this season.

Novak Djokovic balances preparation with flexibility

Currently sitting fourth in the Live ATP Race to Turin, Djokovic’s qualification for the ATP Finals looks almost guaranteed, especially if he makes a deep run in Shanghai. However, the Serbian admitted that he no longer structures his schedule with long-term commitments, focusing instead on carefully choosing events where he feels mentally and physically prepared.

With an exhibition in Saudi Arabia at the Six Kings Slam also on his calendar, Djokovic appears to be balancing competitive commitments with selective appearances, a strategy that has kept him at the top of the sport despite the physical demands of his age.

Whether he decides to make the trip to Turin or not, his confirmed Athens appearance has already generated significant buzz, with fans eager to see how Novak Djokovic will close out his season.
